“Now that the E Street Band has come off the road “for a little while,” Max Weinberg can back to concentrating solely on his Tonight Show Band, right? You might think so… but there’s just too much Mightiness to be contained by one gig. Later this month, Miami will witness the debut of the Max Weinberg Big Band.

Max unveils his 15-piece band — nearly double the size of his Tonight Show combo — for two shows at Fontainebleau Miami Beach, December 27 and 28 at 8:00 p.m. As just announced: “Weinberg has fulfilled his long held dream and vision with this new swinging 15-piece big band composed of the cream of LA’s musicians including trumpeter Mark Pender and pianist Scott Healy of The Tonight Show Band…. expanding his interests to capture the essence of the classic soundtrack to the much loved ‘Rat Pack’ era and invoking such musical heroes as Buddy Rich, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Maynard Ferguson, among others.”

“In remarks at the White House, Mr. Obama thanked the honorees for “the joy and the beauty” they brought to people’s lives.

“In times of war and sacrifice, the arts — and these artists — remind us to sing and to laugh and to live. In times of plenty, they challenge our conscience and implore us to remember the least among us,” Mr. Obama said. “In moments of division or doubt, they compel us to see the common values that we share; the ideals to which we aspire, even if we sometimes fall short. In days of hardship, they renew our hope that brighter days are still ahead.”

A 19-time Grammy winner firmly rooted in the Jersey Shore, Mr. Springsteen has made top-selling albums including 1975’s “Born to Run” — which, in addition to the title track, included “Thunder Road” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” — and 1984’s “Born in the U.S.A.” He has also won an Academy Award.

At the State Department dinner, which was emceed by the comedienne and 2003 honoree Carol Burnett, the violinist Itzhak Perlman spoke of how Mr. Springsteen, 60, who is known for his famously long concerts with his E Street Band, connected with his audience.”

One day, after driving me home, my Dad parked the car in front of the house and cut off the engine and sat there but didnt get out. He turned on the CD player, changed it to track 1 and said ‘listen to this.’ I sat there in silence and listened for the first time to Bruce Springsteen’s intro speech before ‘The River.’

At the end of Bruce’s story, as he belts out the first note on the harmonica, my Dad said to me ‘that alway makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.’ My Dad very rarely opens up like that. I’ll never forget that moment.

Another time I asked my Dad ‘what does he means by unicorn and wedding coat?’ (The lyric is ‘union card and wedding coat’). That was embarassing. I often felt like a bit of a let down to my Dad because I wasn’t good at sports and rather than playing football I was in a drama club and performed in musicals. And so mentioning something girly like unicorns to my Dad made me feel like such a moron.

Earlier this year at Glastonbury Festival, me and my brother waited in front of the Pyramid stage for 11 hours so that we would see Bruce. And my parents, watching it from home on the BBC, saw the Boss run out to the crowd, and saw me and my brother right there at the front, face to face with Bruce Springsteen. We called Dad straight after the set. He said that he never thought 30 years ago that he would see his two sons right there at a Bruce Springsteen gig like that. He sounded really proud.

(…) Since October of 2007 you’ve done 171 headlining shows, with more than 4 million people in attendance. Close to 10 million fans saw you on headlining dates this decade. Why work the road so hard for so long?

I can’t say I experience it as a grind. Of course you’re flying in, you’re flying out and you’re driving, but I really like the people that I do this with. I like being with them on stage and off, I enjoy the time we spend traveling together, and I enjoy the work that we do. And I feel privileged to have the audience I have and to be able to do what we’re doing at the level we’re doing it right now. If you’re a sports figure, you’re prime passes at such a young age. There’s no ceiling here. I believe if you come and see us now you’re seeing the best E Street Band that’s ever played.

We stopped playing in 1988 and didn’t play again until 1998, so if I’m looking at a 20-year-old kid in the audience, they were not born when we stopped playing. There’s a tremendous thrill in coming out and seeing those people who you know would never have been able to experience the band if you hadn’t picked up the sword again. To see those people get involved in all your music, new music and old music, is fascinating. Not that you don’t get tired or fatigued, but there’s always a night, no matter how tired you are, when you’re on stage during the night that you go, “Oh my God, this is just wonderful.”
