My music was a tool for detective work. At some point I think that’s why the records took a long time. I identified with music so deeply…
And I’m still so deeply connected to my work that the questions that I tried to answer at 27: who am I? Where do I belong? What’s it mean to be working? What’s possible to address as a musician? What does it mean to be an American? What does it mean to be a son? A friend, you know? Later on, a father?
…These are all things that I felt driven to search through the mysteries of in my music. I don’t know if it was a choice. I think in the end very often your stories choose you, rather than you choosing your stories.
And I think as a young man I had so much confusion that this was my way to try and resolve and repair. All artists are repairers: make some movies, paint a picture, write a book, write a song – it’s repairing work. And that was how I thought of my craft.
